Company Overview

The Interstate Family of Companies, headquartered in Springfield, Virginia, encompasses a global enterprise providing residential and commercial moving and storage, employee relocation services, and supply chain management logistics supporting corporations, government and defense, as well as individual consumers. Interstate is an 91+–million–dollar organization operating a fleet of approximately 300 vehicles, employing nearly 300 people, and boasting a network of more than 1,500 service partners worldwide. Family-owned and operated, the company is entrusted with the care and oversight of more than $1 billion in customer-valued goods and property annually. Interstate distinguishes itself with key industry certifications, including ISO 9001:2008, the FIDI FAIMPlus designation, IOMI certification, and it is an 11-time recipient of the NDTA Award for Quality Service.

Arthur E. Morrissette, Sr. opened Interstate’s doors in 1943 with a used truck worth $450, a dolly and a few furniture pads. His first moving invoice was $12.50, and in the winter of that year, Mr. Morrissette sold bundles of firewood to keep the business going.

Over the next 40 years, Interstate added long-distance and international moving to its services; found its home in Springfield, VA; and developed a training facility and program at its headquarters, a moving industry first. Interstate continued to build its business on providing Top Hat® Service, a company motto where customers were given the very best treatment, no matter size or type of move. As the company continued to grow and change, the industry and the community started to take notice.

In 1986, Arthur Morrissette received the prestigious Virginia Movers and Warehousemen’s Commonwealth Award for innovations in the industry, including Interstate’s enhancement of the industry image; safety on the highways; and his outstanding unselfish public service. Less than a decade later, the Sales and Marketing Executives of Washington, D.C. named Mr. Morrissette the “1995 Metropolitan Washington Executive of the Year” in recognition of Interstate’s incredible growth.

Today, Interstate’s offices and warehouses have expanded to more than 300,000 square feet in three locations, making it one of the largest service providers in the Mid-Atlantic region. Interstate is one of the U.S. Department of Defense’s primary movers. The DoD also ranks Interstate among the nation’s top 20 service companies for relocation, transportation, and logistics.

The company’s commitment to the community is clear through its philanthropic endeavors, including 26 years supporting the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots program. Interstate partnered with United Way to support the Haitian relief efforts through the collection and transportation of basic medical supplies during the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake. The company is also known for its long history of supporting the local community through sponsorships/donations, and was named the 2015 Corporate Citizen of the Year by the Northern Virginia Chamber.

Since 1943, the Interstate team has built a foundation of trust, established partnerships, and innovation to the moving and storage industry. As the company proudly celebrates its 75th Anniversary in 2017, Interstate embraces its past and looks forward to continued success.
