The Most Common Moving Mistakes- and How to Avoid Them.

Whether you’re moving cross-country or just down the street, moving is a big process. While you’re consumed in moving projects, you may miss a few important details. Lack of preparation for a move can cause added stress and unnecessary problems.

Here’s how to prevent some of the most common mistakes while moving:

Not planning your move. It’s recommended to begin planning for your move 60 days before the actual move date. If you’re moving during the peak summer season, be sure to reserve a moving company well in advance of your desired move date. Check out our checklist to help you properly plan.

Hiring a less than reputable mover. Quality service may come at a higher price; don’t choose a moving company just because they provided the cheapest estimate. Fixing moving disasters is expensive and avoidable with the help of well-trained professionals. Make sure to check references, licenses, and insurances of any moving company you are researching..

Not getting an estimate. Before you hire a moving company, find out how much it’s going to cost you to move. Movers offer two kinds of estimates--binding and non-binding estimates. Don’t rely on just one quote from one mover. Contact several movers (at least three), and make sure to receive all move estimates in writing.

Packing too much stuff. Moving is a great time to sort through items you may have forgotten about, and to dispose of unwanted items. If you haven’t used something in over a year, it’s time to get rid of it. Not everything you have in your current home is going to work in your new home, so keep that in mind.

Packing the day before. Starting to pack the day before a move is a recipe for disaster. Packing a house takes time and preparation. It is recommended you begin packing at least two weeks before your move. Make a plan of attack and make sure you have all the necessary moving boxes and other supplies.

Not labeling moving boxes. Labeling your moving boxes only takes a few seconds and can save you endless hours of frustration. Label the room they belong in, as well as what they contain. This will save you time when unpacking and will help you stay organized.

In the hustle and bustle of getting ready to move, it’s easy to make a few mistakes. Avoid these common mistakes to help simplify and ensure your move goes smoothly!
