Stage Your Home To Sell

Moving to a new home is exciting, but you have to wrap up loose ends at your old place — often by selling it. It is important to give your house the best chance of selling, which is generally done by staging your home. Wondering where to start? Here are some tips to help you get started:

  1. Plan: Complete a walkthrough of each room in your house and determine what needs to be fixed or upgraded. Consult a real estate professional for advice on what items to focus on fixing prior to staging your home, along with more general staging advice. Hire a professional contractor to complete any major projects.
  2. Clean and Declutter: Nothing looks better than a clean house. Thoroughly clean each part of your home by scrubbing tiles, bathrooms and hardwood floors and steam cleaning any carpets or drapes. Organize closets and rearrange furniture to best optimize and show off your space. Dispose of items that you do not plan on taking with you. Decluttering keeps your house looking organized and appealing to potential buyers.
  3. Depersonalize: Personal items, such as family photos, pet items and toys for children should be placed out of sight. If possible, remove items from your garage and store them offsite. This depersonalizes the home and shows the optimal space of the garage, allowing your guests to envision themselves in the home more easily.
  4. Curb Presentation: Scope the exterior of your home by looking for chipped paint, cracks in windows or the foundation, or dead plants that need to be removed. Ensure that the front doorbell works. If your siding or deck flooring are grimy, try power-washing to keep them looking brand-new. To maximize curb appeal, try planting colorful trees, shrubs and flowers around your house.
  5. Create Appeal: Baking cookies or burning a scented candle makes your house smell delicious and appeals to the senses of your guests. The lighting should accent the room as well, making it feel light and open. Offering light refreshments during an open house is a great way to make guests feel comfortable.

Happy staging!
