Packing 101

If You Are Packing Yourself, Pack Smart!

  • Pack ahead of time and in small increments.
  • List high-value items on the special form provided. All items worth more than $100 per pound or $2,000 total are considered high-value.
  • Use sturdy moving boxes with lids that can be completely sealed.
  • Write the contents and the room in which it should be placed in your new home on every moving box.
  • Pack heavier items on the bottom of the moving box and lighter ones on top. Use soft cushioning material to protect fragile items and prevent shifting.
  • Use smaller boxes for heavier items, such as books, and larger boxes for light and bulky objects, such as pillows and quilts.
  • Pack delicate glassware and fragile items individually. Pack dishes on their edges, not flat in the box. (We can supply the appropriate packing materials.)
  • Mark as FRAGILE all mirrors, antiques, and large, odd-shaped items that require crating.
  • Pack moving boxes until they are full – don’t leave extra space.
  • Drain and dry waterbeds. Use moisture-absorbent crystals to help prevent mildew.
  • Clean, dry, and disconnect major appliances.
  • Look under beds, couches, and other furniture on legs for anything you may have overlooked.
  • Seal boxes with “Packed by Owner” tape, or mark them “PBO.”
  • Don’t try to do everything yourself. Our professional packers are fast, efficient, and careful, and have completed extensive training to ensure your belongings arrive safely.
